Maribeth McFaul

I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and have fond memories of attending music and art camp in the Santa Cruz mountains in my youth. However, I put my passion for creativity on the back burner as a pre-med/biology student at Cal State Fresno. I moved to Mission Viejo, California in 1979 and then followed my calling to become an artist.

Enrolling at Saddleback College in 1980, I took every art class offered, completed the Graphic Design certificate program, and worked as a graphic designer for the next 10 years. I pursued an MFA at Cal State Long Beach, obtaining a teaching credential in 2009. Art education became my primary focus for the next 10 years as I taught visual art in Capistrano Unified School District until June, 2017. I am an active member of the California Art Education Association, leading workshops for art educators.

As you’ll see in my art at the gallery, watercolor has been my preferred media because I enjoy the challenge. My painting style has been influenced by master artists, Georgia O’Keefe and Joseph Rafael, and contemporary watercolorists George James and Katherine Anderson. I am drawn to images of nature with strong contrasts and vivid color. My current work is watercolor on Yupo (a smooth synthetic paper) which provides an opportunity to create small abstractions within a larger realistic composition.

My other artist expression, street art, started as a hobby and a way to promote the arts in my community. It has now become an excuse to escape on periodic “art-cations” to chalk festivals around the country. I have received awards and featured artist recognition in various street painting events including Arts Alive in Mission Viejo, OC Fair, Big Fork, MT, Via Arte in Bakersfield, Palo Alto Festival of the Arts, ChalktoberFest in Marietta, Georgia, and the Sarasota Chalk Festival in Florida.
