Artist of the Month
Deborah Weinstein

jan2016-dw1Chicago native Deborah Weinstein is a graduate of Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, where she first discovered the joy of figure drawing, and, although not an art major, had the opportunity to complete an independent study in painting. Moving to Boston after college, Deborah attended drawing workshops at the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, while also teaching herself photography, working out of her home darkroom. She continued with painting, drawing, and photography during her years raising a family on Kibbutz Ein Dor in Israel, and later in Chicago, where she focused mainly on drawing and studied with the well-known portrait artist Richard Halstead.Upon moving to San Clemente in 2007 Deborah dove head first into the vibrant arts community that flourishes in this area. She has been painting full time in her studio on Laguna Canyon Road since 2009, and she has also studied with some of the top artists and teachers in the area, including Cynthia Grilli, Lenny Scarolla, Peggy Kroll Roberts, Otto Sturcke, Greg LaRock, Scott Yeskel, Robin Hall and Diana Ponting. Her work these days is in oils on canvas or paper, with people of all ages as her main subjects. She draws inspiration from her own photography, a collection of images now spanning some 45 years, from live models and from the energy of the arts community that surrounds her.

Deborah’s work has been recognized in shows at the San Clemente Art Association, including Best of Show and First Place in 2010 and 2013, and at the SoCal Artists juried exhibition ‘Go Figure’, where she won First Place in 2009. In 2012 she was an exhibitor at Art-A-Fair. In 2014, Deborah had two paintings accepted into the juried show “All Media All Ages” sponsored by the Irvine Fine Arts Center. This year (2015), three of her recent paintings were accepted into the IFAC show opening in October. Her painting is also featured on the cover of the fall 2015 calendar published by the Laguna Beach Alliance for the Arts, and she has been a member of the Cove Gallery since May 2015.

Meet Our Resident Artists
Chris Meredith

sept2015-cm4

Christopher Meredith is an emerging artist from Huntington Beach, California. For the last 20 years, Meredith’s passion for art focused primarily in black-and-white pencil portrait drawings. He spent two decades honing his drawing skills until his mother-in-law asked him to paint a 5 foot wide seascape of the Huntington Beach Pier. That painting got a full page spread in the local paper. People started asking for giclees and Meredith’s painting career began. By his 5th painting, he was asked to be the famous Marine Painter Wyland’s first ever featured artist at his home studio gallery in Laguna Beach. Then he was named the Huntington Beach Art Walk’s Acrylic Painter of the Year and asked to return to the Wyland Gallery for a second showing a few months later. He has also displayed in the DAX Gallery in Costa Mesa and has been accepted to juried art shows such as the Orange County Fair and the Southwest Arts Festival.
